It is found in the hot regions of India and Lanka, especially on the seashores and on the hills up to a height of 800 m. It is found in abundance in Bengal and the South. It is planted on the boundaries of fields and gardens.

The pith of its seeds is hot in potency, dry, Balya, periodic fever preventive, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, mild sedative, hemostasis, analgesic and anthelmintic. It is used in intermittent fever, puerperal fever, colic, asthma, vata disorders, skin diseases, inflammation and ulcers etc.

Its seeds are very beneficial for hemiplegia, ordinary fever, continuous fever, cold fever and especially malaria. Powder of seeds is given with black pepper in the amount of 500-1000 mg before the onset of fever. It should not be given on empty stomach. It is considered beneficial like quinine. It is also used in the form of tonic after fever.

Use of seeds in puerperal fever or during delivery is beneficial in all ways. It reduces fever. The uterus contracts, pain reduces, menstruation gets purified and if there is a wound somewhere, it also gets healed.

In case of tuberculosis, decoction of seeds is given.

Powder of its seeds is put on castor leaf and tied on the swelling and oropharyngitis and fed to it. Swaras of its (putikaranja) leaves is beneficial in elephantiasis (Su. Chi. 19). Grinding seeds and tying them with castor oil on other types of swelling is also done.

Its roots and leaves are antipyretic. The Swaras of its leaves is given in chronic fever, cold, skin disease caused in the second stage of syphilis, worm and liver disorder.
